Art & Kim’s Yaletown Engagement Photography Session
For the past 10 years, Lachlan and Art have established a close camaraderie training kickboxing together at Vancouver’s InFighting Training Centres . So when Art and Kim got engaged, we were thrilled that they wanted us to photograph their wedding and were excited to plan out their Yaletown engagement photography session.
Last year, while traveling with Kim in Japan, Art had planned to pop the question. He envisioned a truly romantic proposal among the classically beautiful cherry blossoms of Japan – what was going to be a true fairy tale moment. Unfortunately the weather had other plans for them and decided on a rainstorm the day before Art’s proposal, which pummeled the cherry blossom trees knocking off all the beautiful pink pedals. Unfazed, Art postponed the proposal and ultimately had a magical opportunity on Boracay Island in the Philippines later on their trip.
So when it came time for their engagement shoot it was no surprise that they wanted to have their photos done among the cherry blossoms of Vancouver, which were actually a gift from Japan to Vancouver in the early 1930’s. In scouting the many cherry blossom locations in Vancouver, we decided on David Lam Park for their Yaletown engagement photography session and confirmed the abundance of cherry blossoms a week before our shoot date. But as fate would have it, a classic Vancouver windstorm hit the day before their photo shoot and relieved the trees of most of their beautiful pink pedals. But as Art did before, we carried on making the best of our situation.
We started our shoot in David Lam Park and slowly made our way over to George Wainborn Park a couple blocks away on the footstep of the Granville Street Bridge. If you’ve never been to George Wainborn Park before you should definitely check out this Yaletown gem. There’s a beautifully designed massive water feature there that turned out to be the perfect setting for some of the more stunning photos we captured that day.
We set Art and Kim up at the front of the water feature and used a telephoto lens to compress the background which featured the beautiful artwork on the Granville Island concrete silos, complimenting the colours of the stylish outfits Art & Kim wore for their shoot. To make these photos really pop we placed Art & Kim’s backs towards the sun and lit them with one of our big studio lights and a 22” silver beauty dish, which we had just recently aquired and used for the first time to much delight on this Yaletown Engagement Photography Session.
It was an absolute pleasure photographing Art & Kim’s Yaletown engagement session and we couldn’t be happier for this amazing couple to be tying the knot this coming October!
